Robert Del Tredici - At Work in the Fields of the Bomb
37. Judge A. Sherman Christensen
Salt Lake City, Utah, April 26, 1987.
Judge Christensen was the "sheep case" judge. In 1955 Utah ranchers sued the government for the loss of thousand of sheep that died after above-ground atomic tests. On the basis of the evidence presented at the 1956 trial, Judge Christensen ruled that radiation did not cause the deaths. Twenty-five years later he reopened the case and concluded that fraud had been perpetrated on the court at the earlier trial and that the ranchers were entitled to a new trial.
"I set aside the earlier judgment because I was convinced that fraud was practiced by the withholding of evidence and that this was of transcendent importance from the standpoint of judicial administration, trial advocacy, and the integrity of judicial proceedings."
