Robert Del Tredici - At Work in the Fields of the Bomb
42. Sadako's Paper Cranes
These are the handwork of Sadako Sasaki. When she was 12 years old Sadako contracted leukemia from earlier exposure to the atomic bomb. She did no wish to die. She refused all painkilling medication and took literally a Japanese proverb that says, "if you fold 1,000 cranes, you will get whatever you wish." She folded 645 of the tiny birds before she died. Kasuga City, Fukuoka, Japan. October 14, 1984.
