Robert Del Tredici - At Work in the Fields of the Bomb

74. Superphenix Breeder

A breeder reactor uses plutonium for fuel and produces more plutonium than it consumes. The principle idea behind the Superphenix was that it would make plutonium for electricity-generating reactors of the future. (In the long run, Plutonium rather than uranium is seen as the prime fuel for the nuclear warheads, so the Superphenix could become a major source of plutonium for the French military. Creys-Malville, France. September 1, 1981.
