Robert Del Tredici - At Work in the Fields of the Bomb
90. Stanrock Tailings Wall
The wall of white sand in back of the trees is made up of radioactive mill wastes from uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario. More than 100 million tons of these tailings have been deposited directly into the environment. Some of them have been carried by the Serpent River System into the Great Lakes. The radioactive piles are unmarked and are not visible from the road. They will remain hazardous for hundreds of thousand of years. Stanrock Mine, Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. August 25, 1986.
