Robert Del Tredici - At Work in the Fields of the Bomb
92. Windscale
... is the complex of rectors and reprocessing facilities that produced the plutonium for Britain's nuclear weapons. In 1957 one of its military reactors burned out of control for 24 hours, spreading fission products over 200 square miles of countryside. Today, Windscale reprocesses irradiated nuclear fuel rods for Britain, Italy, and Japan. It also makes plutonium and tritium for the British military. Reprocessing generates large quantities of high-level nuclear waste. Seascale, Cumbria, England. September 6, 1981.
