Nuclear Disarmament

1. The reaffirmation on the part of the nuclear-weapon States (joint statement of 8 April 1997 to the Preparatory Committee at its first session) that they will continue to pursue, with etermination, systematic and progressive efforts to reduce nuclear weapons, with the ultimate goal of eliminating those weapons, is to be welcomed.

2. In order to reinforce confidence in the incremental approach to nuclear disarmament while helping to ensure the continuance of the improved international security environment created by

the indefinite extension of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, this reaffirmation should now be elaborated.
3. In the context of the "systematic and progressive efforts" that they have agreed to pursue, the nuclear-weapon States should set out their perspective on the future steps they will take to reduce nuclear weapons globally, with the ultimate goal of eliminating those weapons.
